I wanted to let everyone know that some of the podcasters here are taking part in an art auction to raise money for the horrendous disaster that is now the BP Oil spill. This is something that everyone needs to do something about. Here at Seqalab some of us were able to get some work in by the deadline. I hope this is only one of many auctions by them to raise money for this disaster. The money is going to Colbert Nation Gulf of America Fund.

Please keep in mind that this auction starts Monday July 5th and runs through Friday July 9th. Each day there will be different artists and different art up for sale. Please buy something to help the cause! I am putting everyone on blast.

One year ago today we lost an important member of SEQALAB, its founder: Prof. Jeremy Wade Mullins. Jeremy was  a talented and funny cartoonist, a great teacher, and an excellent friend.

Everyone here at the SCAD sequential art department that worked with Jeremy appreciated him and his dedication to the program. There is not a day that goes by in Norris Hall that his name doesn’t come up. Not because of sadness, but because his efforts are still effecting our students and faculty. We’re talking about what he taught us.

Jeremy’s parents have establish the Jeremy W. Mullins Memorial Scholarship at SCAD. The first awards were awarded just over a week ago. Graduate students Kori ZIck and Melanie Florencio were given the opportunity to travel to a national conference–something that Jeremy placed a great deal of importance on. The department is grateful to his parents for this honor.
Today we acknowledge the anniversary of his passing, but we miss him and think of him every day.

For the past four years SCAD has been taking part in the Convention by giving workshops to all the convention goers. The Professors of the Sequential Art department from both the Atlanta campus and the Savannah campus were in attendance to give talks on specific aspects of comics, storytelling, storyboarding, toy design, and various other topics.

Heroes Con gets better year after year and the professors all enjoy taking part in the convention as a way to promote the school, the students, and their work, as well as finding artists who would like to come for our yearly comics art forums.

The Fluke minicomics festival, hosted every year in Athens Georgia, is a meeting for independent comics creators and enthusiasts to buy, sell and trade comics and other ephemera. From 2002 through 2009 Fluke has been held at a venue in downtown Athens, but this year Fluke graduated to Ciné, a bar/cafe/cinema just a few blocks away from their original space. Ciné is a larger and more open venue which allowed for a better flow of traffic as well as more space for people to sell their wares.

Last year I attended fluke not knowing what to expect, and was pleasantly surprised to find everyone there to be friendly and open minded. It was a refreshing break from the usual ‘con’ atmosphere, where one can easily be bogged down in brands and marketing campaigns. This year, I attended as a vendor, and was thrilled to find the same atmosphere that had welcomed me the previous year.

To sell your work at fluke the only thing you have to do is get there first. I arrived at Ciné at around 9:30 with several friends, and ended up being at the very front of the line. We waited until 11 o’clock and then rushed in with thirty or so other people to set up our tables. The mission of fluke is to blur the lines between attendee and vendor, so anyone is welcome to set up shop as long as space is available. Having been on both sides of the table I would have to say that they succeed in this mission. A vendor at Fluke will probably at least make their entrance fee back, but making money is not the point. Fluke is a celebration of independently created and produced comics and art, which is why my favorite part of the show is trading.

I came to Fluke with 4 different minis to trade and sell and left with over 75 different comics. Each is a piece of art and I love being able to see all the hard work and love that went into each of them. Some are hand stapled and folded, some are screen-printed, some are die-cut, and all of them are representational of the person who created them.

Meeting the people that make these comics is another fantastic part. Many of the attendees are SCAD students and alumni, so if you are a student then Fluke takes on another level of importance. I was able to meet and network with people in the sequential art program at SCAD Atlanta, as well as get to know people in the Savannah department better. Talking to the people sitting at tables near mine was a great way to better understand the indie comics ’scene’ in Athens. I got a chance to meet Eleanor Davis and Drew Weing, two of my favorite artists (and SCAD alums!), and get a copy of Secret Science Alliance signed by both of them.

Fluke is the perfect convention for anybody interested in the indie comics scene, mini comics, or self publishing and is a great way to make new friends and connections. I strongly recommend going at least once and finding out what its all about for yourself.

Richard Bruning, the Senior Vice President Creative Director of DC Comics came down for SCADCon and Editor’s day this year. He was gracious enough to let us record him. He takes us through the artists that have worked for him, what his job entails and then answers questions for all the students who were free from the Editor portfolio reviews. Those students who did come to his talk were able to get some serious one on one with Mr. Bruning. As with the Editors from all the companies, Mr.Bruning enjoyed his stay here in Savannah and was really amazed with the students that came out to listen to what he had to say.

We here at Seqalab really appreciate the opportunity that SCADCon and Editor’s Day always allows us. Where else can you be able to have some serious reviews with people who can hire you?

This year, SCAD launched a precursor to next year’s SCAD-Con. It was an experimental day that brought editors away from Norris and into a room with high ceilings and separated cubicles for one-on-one meetings with students.

~The previous night’s Editor’s Day Panel was held at the Trustee’s Garden. We’ve been bouncing around for the past few years and never got a solid venue. The upgrade was able to fit all the students who wanted to see the editors, even if the discussion intimidated a lot of us. But even with a daunting talk from editors, the next day we found them to be warm, receptive, and all but their previous selves. We had a ball.

~Throughout the day, Ballroom C got more and more crowded. Waiting lists got carried away, but our faculty didn’t mind. They wanted all of their students to see as many editors as possible. It was a great place just to mingle and meet with other people in the department, and with such a big room to do it in, I wouldn’t be surprised if everyone in the entire major was there.

~The results have been pretty positive. The environment may have helped the cause, as most editors gave positive reviews. Career fair has never really been the place for sequential artists, but editor’s day has. The move to the large convention center definitely put everyone in a better mood, and streamlined the process efficiently. People were receiving email addresses, open for more samples. Business cards were exchanged, boxes for editors were set up with mini comics dumped in.

~Artist Alley tables were a huge success as well! No one really thought that making money would be hugely possible. It was an event for mostly networking and self-promoting. Although some vendors did turn a lot of merchandise, others simply were made aware of. A lot of SCAD students became patrons, but there was also a handful of faculty members and career fair organizers who came to stop and peruse through the work of students.

~Prints and illustrations did very well. Comics and Minis not so much. Sketchbooks were somewhere in between.

~Women in comics is not even an issue anymore. A casual attendee could accidentally walk into our ballroom instead of the Career Fair and not notice it was a comics-only event. I’ve also heard lots of women receiving positive feedback over the men, and women were absolutely more expressive of their reviews than the guys were.

~Alumni were like celebrities. Especially the professionally working ones, because not only are they currently working, they used to be us. Most notable was Rebekah Isaacs, who not only had a panel discussion to talk about her career, but also took up some portfolio reviews. Thanks for coming to Savannah, Rebekah!

~
While there were a lot of great things at this SCAD-Con, there were just minor things that could be improved. But if the goal is to expand to this size and larger permanently, then with open arms the sequential art department welcomes it!

David Duncan and Trisha Albano for putting together the portfolio reviews and booking editors. Mark Macauley for bringing Editor’s Day into a larger venue. It was badly needed. Thank you for calling us up for editors, looking through our portfolios before seeing editors, and just being our guides throughout our time at SCAD. We really appreciate all the work you put in for us.

Reviews | On Brooke Allen’s A Home for Mr. Easter:

Allen’s storytelling propels the pair from place to place in a somewhat breathless manner but never forgetting to fill each encounter with detail. Her black and white artwork is unqiue and comical, with enough realistic touches to ground the story in our world, without telling us when or where this story takes place. That in itself makes it both magical and timeless.

District Quarterly is currently seeking submissions for the spring issue. District Quarterly is a new, award-winning, student-produced magazine published through the Student Media Center at SCAD. The magazine features original work by SCAD students, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, sequential art, illustration, painting, photography and more. The different works are combined by subject and theme to create a cohesive publication fall, winter and spring quarters each year.
The theme for the spring issue is materialism, and the deadline for submissions is Friday, March 26. Any current student at SCAD, undergrad or grad, may submit their work to be considered for publication in the magazine. The spring issue of District Quarterly is scheduled to launch near the end of April.

Submissions for the materialism-themed issue may be e-mailed to quarterly@scaddistrict.com by March 26.

It’s Spring again and the SCAD’s Sequential Art Department finds itself welcoming a group of editors and publishers to its annual Editors’ Day.  The event will take place April 8-9th, 2010. Last year brought in six great editors, but this year we have NINE confirmed so far.  The panel discussion will be on Thursday at Trustee’s Garden from 7:30-9:00pm (refreshments and mingling from 7-7:30pm).  The portfolio-reviews will be on Friday across the river at the Savannah International Trade & Convention Center!

Viral | Alum Elena Barbarich created a Lady Gaga-inspired illustration based on the song “Telephone”, featuring Beyonce. The blogosphere has exploded, with Lady Gaga herself tweeting the image and calling it “completely brilliant“. I’m sure Elena has made a ton of page views from this endorsement

Art Editor to The New Yorker, Francoise Mouly speaks a lot about the history of comics, where comics are now, and what comics are doing that change the country’s perception of the medium.

This week she had all the blogs fighting over the scoop of The New Yorker’s 85th Anniversary variant covers.

She examines how her involvement in creating comics for adults has in turn taught her that in today’s culture, there aren’t quite enough comics for children. She continues the interview by recommending graphic novels to read that have made SEQA’s own must-reads, (ironically she doesn’t mention as many children’s comics as she does more mature reads).

She also explains the political covers that she edited for the New Yorker, including the New York Times “Most Memorable Image of the 2008 Campaign”, Barry Blitt’s illustration that had Barack and Michelle Obama in Terrorist outfits. It’s an informing interview that opens the mind of one of the most influential people to comics whose work is still relevant in the industry.

AT THE PIRATE HOUSE IN SAVANNAH

Free event will include a series of comic book-making demonstrations

The SCAD Sequential Art Department will host A Mini-Comics Expo on the second floor of Pirate House, 20 East Broad Street, Savannah, on Friday, February 26, from 11am – 4pm. 

Close to 40 vendors  — students, alumni, and faculty of SCAD’s acclaimed Sequential Art department — will be on site to exhibit and sell their self-published mini-comics and zines.  This event celebrates hand-made comic-books and DIY publishing.  Other department-related publications and student anthologies will be also be available.

There will also be a series of fun and informative demonstrations led by faculty and graduate students, including drawing comics and creating and binding comic books open to kids and adults alike. 

The Expo and all the workshops are free and open to the public. 

Communication | SCAD’s Dean of Communications and Former Department chair John Lowe shares a SCADRadio show with Len Cripe that airs at 11 A.M on Mondays. It’s like NPR, but for SCAD, and not nationally broadcasted on radio, but online! [SCADRadio.org]

I just got comfortable drawing for a living, and then I stopped pursuing my dream for a long time. Brian Stelfreeze once told me the only I wouldn’t get work in comics was if I stopped trying to. He was right about that, and a lot of other things.

Resources | Webcomics.com has recently switched to a subscription model. Many SCAD students have been previous users of the website and its free content, but it looks like the resource is no more, unless $30 is paid. It’s sad to see it gone, as it was helpful to some of the students that were honestly interested in webcomics. $30 a year might actually be quite a bargain, ofcourse, but it was still nice to have something that costed nothing on top of our tuition. Meanwhile, we hope that the podcast remains free.

Winter break for SCAD students is a long one, but many manage to stay busy. Our break lasts from right before Thanksgiving to the first week in January, which gives us a lot of time to get our side projects done. A handful of students even went to study in Japan (pictured above)! Here’s a round-up of what some SEQAHomies have been up to.

• Chair to the the Department, David Allan Duncan, was quoted a whole bunch in an article concerning Portland’s recent acquiring of Dark Horse Archives. He was also drawn into a strip of PvP by Scott Kurtz.
• Kel MacDonald had an eventful break. Her blog post about Keenspot was passed around the community, and she was a guest strip artist for PvP!

Last Friday was the opening of Professor Tom Lyle’s solo show in Brunswick, GA.  There were plenty of SCAD students in attendance as well as friends, family, and many visitors from around the Brunswick area who were interested in seeing an art show of black and white comic artwork. Displayed were over 50 original pages from Spider-man, Robin, X-men and Tom’s recent work on Vigilante.

The show runs from November 6 - Dec 2.

The Japan Foundation in Japan and Consulate General of Japan in Atlanta are going to host a Japanese Manga Creator Lecture and Workshop on Friday, November 13  at SCAD-Atlanta. Scholarships | Grad students may want to look into the Swan Fellowship, though it only offers a grant to students seeking an M.A. or Ph.D. Most graduate students at SCAD are working towards M.F.As, but it’s still worth looking over because awards are up to $15,000. [The Library of Congress]

This episode was a bit long in the making but here it is! On Friday October 23rd, the legendary Chris Claremont sat down with us for a phone interview. He was kind enough to agree to give us some of his time on a busy Friday afternoon.

It was a small gathering of PJ’s that met together for this interview. The Comics’ Art Forum was going on and everyone was scrambling from workshop to workshop. We however, Rashad Doucet, Donny Cates, and I, the Gelastic John Larison,  asked Mr. Claremont some pointed questions about his time working on the X-Men, his thoughts on writing scripts for artist, and what his plans are for the future.We got him to divulge some of his secrets and thoughts about the industry and share some great anecdotes about his time working for Marvel comics.

Mr. Claremont has a number of new books coming out soon.  Most notably he has been writing X-Men forever, starting up where he left off. He also let us in on the news that next year in April he has some New Mutants books coming out.

This is definitely a long one folks but worth every minute.

I would like to thank Mr. Claremont for taking the time to let us interview him.

Professor Tom Lyle has tons of original artwork from his days of drawing Marvel and DC titles in the 90s. He’s showcasing tons of illustration and original pages from Amazing Spider-man, Robin, and much much more!

SAS (The Sequential Art Society) has partnered with Barnes & Noble booksellers for some cool in-store events!

SAS is doing a bookfair at Barnes and Nobles from Nov. 5-8th (you can go to any Barnes and Nobles store to support us but we will only have table set up at the BN here at Oglethorpe Mall).

All that we ask is that people who are already buying books that weekend, say their buying them on behalf of SAS, they get their books and some of the profit goes to SAS to help us riase money for our Anthology! We are going to have student run mini-workshops there and it’s going to be a blast so please come out and support our club!

This week’s podcast has been replaced with the 2009 Comics Art Forum panel discussion. Each year at Comics Art Forum we ask our guests questions about their personal work, the industry, and working within the sequential world.
This year we were thankful to have Mark Schultz returning for the 15th year out of 16 years at CAF. Mark Schultz is an amazing artist and a wonderful friend to the Sequential Art Department for being such a long standing CAF attendee.  Derek Kirk Kim, Ben Caldwell,  Brandon Graham, and Robert Atkins were there, and Sanford Green gave a special appearance. Colleen Coover and Paola Rivera were not able to attend the panel discussion, but were definitely there in spirit, and they did some wonderful workshops the next day.
The 2009 Comics Art Forum panel discussion was full of industry insights as well as the artist work schedules. There are stories of luck and stories of heartbreak, and over it all are the artists inspiring all the sequential students to go out there and be a mighty force!

My favorite con of the year is APE. For most people at SCAD, Maryland’s Small Press Expo is the choice. But the two aren’t that different at all. For those more familiar with SPX, APE has a lot of the same enthusiasm for comics, but being on the west coast brought something else into the mix.

APE usually occurs in April and is advertised as being in APE-ril. The move happened because the SDCC committee was experiencing con fatigue. They run WonderCon in February/March, and SDCC at the end of July, and April was just too close in between. APE made more sense to be moved to the Fall. It’s held a little earlier this time around. APE 2008 was held on November 1^st and 2^nd, but the decision to move it up a few weeks allowed them to avoid the rain that comes with the season.

The San Francisco Concourse is an amazing building and fits the mood of independent comics. Everyone is buzzing about the weather and the great turnout. Tables have been added in sections that used to be empty and with the rate of expansion the venue may have to be changed in two or three years.

There isn’t really buzz book of APE, so far. There isn’t a singular item that people are flocking to. Last year

It’s a magnificent day to be in the city. I flew in Thursday and just missed the Monday and Tuesday storms that attacked the entire East Bay. The sun came out, a cool breeze swept in, and I was able to take full advantage of the most comfortable weather that I’ve been missing. APE had no idea how ready I was for it.

It’s the first night and I’m completely worn out.

First of all, this was the first time I’ve ever seen a line forming after the doors had already been open for an hour. I had to stand in line to purchase a badge when the norm was walking up to an empty vendor and picking up one. It wasn’t a long line, but there is no doubt that I stood in one.

There is a huge passion for the arts, and it can be felt at every table. Energy is just pulsating, colors are jumping off from screen prints, and books are not pushed upon passing people like a car salesmen. Instead, handmade zines, stuffed toys, silkscreened tees, and DIY comics invite any wandering eye that is in search for something new and refreshing. The east coast got their taste of welcoming in new and exciting minis with SPX, and now the west is getting that same experience.

There hasn’t been any major complaints at all towards the show. Sales seem to be up and interest is at large! People are seemingly taking more risks on zines and self-published comics they’ve never seen before. Hardcover graphic novels are a big item, as well as small hand-bound books. Prints are everywhere, as well as tees, but overall I think comics are still the best sellers of the convention.

We’ll be back for a full con report this coming week! If you are attending APE, or have any thoughts on the subject please let us know in our comments section! We’ll see how Sunday shapes up and how the attendance numbers may drop, but I’m predicting that thehigh  level of enthusiasm will remain the same.

Today is the last day to sign-up for workshops and portfolio reviews. Sign-up through your professor at Norris Hall and turn in your sheets to Trasha’s office in room 1A. Some will be teaching the same workshop on both Saturday and Sunday. It should be noted that those with two workshops will be taught once throughout the weekend and not twice as usual. *Rather than paying a monetary fee, current SCAD students interested in registering for the Zine Fair are required to submit a sample of their work (strip, editorial, etc.) that could be considered for publication on the District Web site (www.scaddistrict.com). District is SCAD’s online student newspaper. The work samples will be used to help promote the work of SCAD students who will have tables at the Zine Fair.

The District will not be publishing creator’s submitted comics in the Comics Section of their online newspaper, but rather in a “Preview”-type article to advertise the Zine and Record Fair.

Did you know that SCAD produced yearly anthologies? Past books have had themes, but this year SCAD is producing books showcasing stories from students with no limitation to content. And it is now open for submissions from SCAD students, faculty and alumni!

Stories must be contained within 2-6 pages of black and white artwork. Reminder, there is no theme and stories can be about anything you want!

Note: Initital submission should be copies of your artwork on standard 8×11 printer paper. Submissions should be labeled with your name, student ID number, e-mail address, and phone number ON EVERY PAGE. Please submit them by hand to Trisha Albano in room 1A, the sooner the better! 

NOTE: A new (and much more official) guideline has been posted up in Norris Hall and are as follows:

- Safe Panel area should be proportionationate to 10×15 (2×3), portrait
- Tones other than black may potentially be printed in secondary color
~ So consider keeping them on a separate layer
- Grays should not be bitmapped - keep them flat for the printer
- Comics should be submitted to Norris room 1A by the deadline posted
- Submit:
~ on standard 8.5″ x 11″ paper, single-sided
~ stapled in upper-left corner
~ form on front

SCAD Student Media presents the third annual Savannah Record and Zine Fair Saturday, Oct. 24, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., at the River Club, 3 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd!

The Zine Fair portion of the event allows sequential artists, comics collectors and enthusiasts to buy, sell and trade their wares. Sequential artists can network with one another and learn more about do-it-yourself publishing. The Zine Fair features the work of students in the university’s Sequential Art department as well as alumni and local artists. The Record Fair portion of the event allows vinyl collectors and enthusiasts and music fans to buy, sell, or trade their wares. Featured items include records, CDs, DVDs, books, magazines, clothing and music memorabilia. Admission is free and open to the public. Registration information after the jump!
