Finding Your Place in the Comics Industry
Student should bring: Pencils and Notebook
From comic strips, superheroes, graphic novels, webcomics, kickstarter and beyond, there are more options than ever for cartoonists to explore; each with their own rules, expectations and untapped potential. Self-publisher turned editor turned full-time graphic novel author Dave Roman (Nickelodeon Magazine, Astronaut Academy, Teen Boat!) will share anecdotes about working in various aspects of the comic industry and offer advice on helping artists find their unique voice.

Raina Telgemeier

Graphic Novelist!
Student should bring: A notebook and a pencil or pen, for jotting down your ideas and suggestions.
Raina Telgemeier makes a living off her comics. Is that really possible? What does it entail? Raina will discuss her humble beginnings, art school, self-publishing, her relationship with her book publisher, self-promotion, accounting, school visits, comic conventions, and her (still humble!) day-in-the-life as a full time, bestselling graphic novelist. Bring your meatiest questions and she’ll do her best to answer them!

Dawud Anyabwile

Drawing From the Soul
Student should bring: Paper, Pencils and Erasers
Drawing From the Soul focuses on encouraging artists to find themselves within their own work. Regardless of the medium, artists must learn the value of communicating ideas and images that reflect their own stories without fear of self expression. Emmy Award winning artist, Dawud Anyabwile shares his journey from street airbrush artist to creating a ground breaking comic series entitled, BROTHERMAN: DICTATOR OF DISCIPLINE. Dawud has also worked with production studios such as MTV Animation in NYC, Klasky Csupo and Nickelodeon in LA and now at Turner Studios and Cartoon Network in Atlanta. His goal is to inspire artists to not only grow in the technical sense but to understand their power as an individual.

Rafael Rosado

Storyboarding for T.V. Animation: a brief case study
Student should bring: Cintiq pen (if you don’t have one, please borrow one) pencil and paper to work out their ideas
How does a Storyboard Artist decide which camera angles to use in a particular sequence? How about shot continuity, or character acting? Using materials from an episode of Batman Brave and the Bold, I’ll demonstrate how I arrive at these decisions. Students will have the opportunity to thumbnail a small section of script from the same episode, using the same set of materials.
